The Quiet Between Seasons

Alexavier Davis, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Gifts of Flowers designed by TA, located in Agawam-Feeding Hills, MA

October slipped away from us.

Not entirely, of course. The flowers still arrived. Arrangements were designed. Deliveries were made. Family responsibilities were met. Life continued moving forward as it always does. Yet somewhere between caring for home, growing the business, and learning new responsibilities, last month's journal quietly passed by unwritten.

As November settles in, we find ourselves standing in the space between seasons. Autumn is beginning to soften while the holidays wait just beyond the horizon. It is a season filled with anticipation, but also an unexpected calm.

The calm before holiday gatherings.

The calm before winter arrives.

The calm before the studio becomes filled with seasonal orders and celebrations.

This year, though, I have noticed something else taking shape during this quieter season.

At twenty-one years old, Alexavier is discovering what it means to step into the world as an adult.

That journey is not always easy.

Recently, he came home excited about an idea. Thinking ahead to the Super Bowl, he purchased small football picks and started imagining football-themed floral arrangements. He talked about ways to make them better, ways to make them stand out, and ways they might bring a smile to someone's table on game day.

The idea itself was simple.

The dream behind it was much bigger.

Building a business requires creativity, but it also requires courage. It means introducing yourself to strangers. It means asking for opportunities. It means hearing "no" sometimes. It means learning that confidence is not something you wake up with one morning. It grows through practice.

As his mother, I sometimes see the hesitation. I know that approaching businesses and speaking about his ideas does not come naturally to him. Yet I also see something more important.

I see him trying.

I see him imagining possibilities.

I see him beginning to understand that every successful business starts with someone willing to take a chance on an idea.

Flowers have taught me that growth is often quiet.

A seed grows beneath the soil long before anyone sees the bloom.

Perhaps people grow the same way.

During this season of preparation, while the studio organizes for the holidays ahead, we are also preparing in less visible ways. We are learning patience. Building confidence. Practicing courage. Discovering that growth happens one conversation, one delivery, one idea, and one day at a time.

The football picks may seem like a small thing.

To me, they represent something much larger.

They represent a young man beginning to believe that he has something to offer the world.

As we move toward the holidays, that may be one of the things for which I am most grateful.

Not perfection.

Not a finished destination.

Just the willingness to keep growing.

One bloom at a time.

With gratitude,
